RETURN TO SENDER is a story about an Heraldic Lion who appears on the crest of the Colvile Family. Just before the outbreak of WW1 on 7th July 1914 the lion is charged with taking a letter from a young man called Ernest who lives in Zomba in the Province of Nyasaland (now Malawi) to his brother Kenneth in Bombay (now Mumbai, India. His journey takes him down the Shire River which joins up with the Zambezi to the Port of Chinde on the east coast of Africa from where he travels to Zanzibar and then across the Indian Ocean to Mumbai. Along the way he meets new friends who share in his adventure with him. 218 days later he arrives in Bombay where he gives the letter to Kenneth who is delighted to see him.

Eighteen drawings (pencil, watercolour and collage) have been scanned and digitally printed onto Somerset Enhanced White Satin 330gsm. Each images measures 35 x 25 cms.

RETURN TO SENDER 2 is an artist’s concertina book showing the Timeline of history in Africa and Europe during the 218 days it took for the letter from Zomba to arrive in Bombay. The text is cut out to resemble telegrams that would have been sent in this format in 1914.

TALKING BIRDY is a humorous book about birds. The prints are paper cuts and the text is typeset. The book is printed on Somerset paper. My thanks to the late Andrew Purches with whom I worked on the typeset and to Diana Sims who bound the book.

THE VIRGINS GARDEN is a concertina book inspired by the Medieval “le jardin enclos” . The images are electron micrographs of the pollen of the various plants named after the Virgin Mary together with some of the fables about the plants.
